What is good for composting

For compost preparation all biodegradable waste are suitable: garden flora, hay, straw, mown grass, leaves, small branches of trees and bushes, sawdust, flora of water bodies, algae, some kitchen waste, tea and coffee grounds.

Before adding mown grass to the compost pile, it should be mixed with larger green waste and organic kitchen waste. Just mowned and piled grass may begin to ferment and to slow down the process of composting.

Before adding weeds with ripen seeds to the compost bin,it should be kept in the sun covered with transparent sheet. Seeds will overheat and lose their ability to germinate.
Fallen tree leaves should be mixed with other waste for composting.

How prepare compost

At the bottom of compost boxes the layer of wood chips, small branches, roots are put. Then it should be poured with layer of garden waste and moisture-absorbing material (peat, sawdust, shredded branches). This ensures that air access to the compost.

Before adding larger waste to the compost bin, it should be shredded. Kitchen waste must be mixed with plant waste, dry waste with wet waste, small waste with large ones. It is recommended to put in the compost larger branches, that prevent waste from being pressed.

The process of composting is faster and better if there is wider range of waste types. Some ready compost can be put in to new compost, it will speed up the procreation of micro-organisms.
Compost mass should not be overpressed and too wet, but also should not be too loose.

Composted waste should be moist, but not so much that water drips when compost is pressed.
At least once a weak compost mass should be turned over to improves aeration, compost does not become dense and it is prevented form flies. Compost mass should me moisten from time to time.

Riped and suitable for use compost is a homogeneous structure, dark in color and similar to the soil.
With a compost box you can make a great compost just on your own property.
